A Travis County grand jury has indicted a former University of Texas police officer on three counts of misuse of official information, accusing him of improperly accessing state computer databases to research his former girlfriend and her friend.
The charges against Zachary Miller, 44, are third-degree felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison on each count.
Miller’s lawyer, Dax Garvin, is out of the country and unavailable for comment, according to his office.
The investigation into Miller began in September 2010 when his ex-girlfriend complained to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to a criminal complaint.
The complaint said that Miller was no longer a UT police officer as of August but did not include the circumstances of his departure.
Miller is charged with accessing information maintained by the Texas Crime Information Center and the Texas Department of Transportation “in an attempt to locate and verify the status of” his former girlfriend and her friend. The indictment also charges him with accessing Texas Department of Public Safety information about his former girlfriend.
Miller was initially charged in late September with breach of computer security, a misdemeanor.
